Now that Nationals are over, it is time for Freestyle...
The state organization is putting together a team to compete at the USA Wrestling Cadet Duals June 7-11 in Loves Park, IL. I am the Coordinator/Coach of the team. I helped coordinate/Coach the Schoolboy Freestyle Team last year.
The wrestler is only eligible if their birth year is 2007 or 2006. The wrestler also must have a Full Athlete USA Wrestling membership (I believe it is the $40 one.). There are No Exceptions to those because those are USA Wrestling rules. Understand that team members must be practicing Freestyle and must come to Freestyle states May 14 (Exceptions to this are going to be hard to justify, but not impossible.). I need to see that the wrestler and the family understand the commitment that is being asked of you all. There are options for training and competitions to be prepare the wrestlers for this event. Contact me for info.
The Team Fee and some/if not all of the uniform will be paid for by our state organization. The uniform packets is the same they will be used for nationals. You will be responsible for travel, hotel, and other expenses. The event is about 9 hours from Charleston. We will have a block of rooms reserved team members. We are working on the details now. I hope that the team would stay together so they can hang out together.
The weight classes are as follows: 88, 94, 100, 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 128, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285. There is no weight allowance. If multiple wrestlers are interested in the same weight, we can work it out. If all else fails, then wrestle-offs will be used.
The event is organized where each state team duals against each other. For Example: Team WV vs. Team Alaska. Last year, the team dualed such teams as Georgia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, Michigan, etc.
The point of this is to try to accomplish a few things: To increase our presence on the National stage when it comes to FS/GR wrestling; to provide opportunities for wrestlers to get national experience in these styles; & to spread interest in especially Freestyle throughout the State. This is a great warm-up for those that will be going to Fargo. You will be guaranteed 8-10 matches. Last year, we wrestled 9 matches.
I would highly encourage the kids that have experience and have had some success in Folkstyle, to give this a try. Most kids say they have a lot of fun doing it and I believe it does nothing but make your Folkstyle wrestling better. It is a change of pace from Folkstyle and keeps the kids in the room when most would be not wrestling in the off-season.
Last year, WV put together its first Freestyle team in history. This will be the first Cadet Freestyle team in history. Leave a legacy for years to come...
