The Big 12 was allotted 8 automatic bids for the NCAA tournament. He finished 8th place. The Big 12 has a rule that allows the next highest place outside of the automatic bid to challenge the guy that got the last spot. Unfortunately for Lucas, the #1 seed, Taylor Lamont, went 0-2 in the tournament and dropped down to the 9th place match. He won and got 9th. Here is where the problem lies. Lamont was pretty much guaranteed an At Large bid to the tournament because he was ranked #10. On Saturday night, the tournament director personally told WVU Coach Flynn and Seibert that there would be no challenge and that Lucas won the spot in the NCAA. Again on Sunday morning, he was told the same thing. All of a sudden during the afternoon session, they reversed their decision and allowed Lamont to challenge him. Lamont beat him and took the spot. Very unfair in my opinion. He was told 2x that the spot was his. He could have celebrated all Saturday night, could have layed around eating bad foods and was no where near physically or mentally prepared for what happened. Also it was pretty dumb because Lamont was gong to get an at large bid anyway. This cost Seibert and the Big 12 a spot in the 133# weight class. The Big 12 would have had 9 spots in the tournament but now only 8.
