Postby aacoach61 » Sun Mar 04, 2018 10:23 pm

2X WV state champ for George Washington HS, Jake Smith came within 1 second of a Big 12 title at 197 lbs. Jake made it to the conference finals as a 4 seed and lost in sudden victory OT based on one less second of riding time. Jake won his state titles at 145 & 160. He moves on to the NCAA tournament. Last year Jake seriously injured his leg in the Big 12 Tournament and did not compete in the NCAA .

Smith did not get an NCAA seed. In the first match he.takes on No. 2 seed Ben Darmstadt (30-1) of Cornell. Darmstadt, who ranks No. 2 in the country with a 30-1 record. Looks like a good time for an upset.

They are all studs, nobody is undefeated at 197...Smith and Jared Haught (VT-PHS alum) can beat anybody in that bracket any given day. Good Luck gentlemen!!

Despite the loss, Smith rebounded with a win in the consolation bracket, pinning Central Michigan's Jordan Atienza in 2:54 for his first win by fall this season. Smith will go head-to-head with Brucki for the second time this season in Friday morning's wrestle-backs, as Brucki picked ”
