State Tournament Hypothetical - No Wrestlers

Postby Bearhugger » Tue Nov 13, 2018 6:05 pm

As many of the long term members of WVMAT know, the forum has become a melting pot of ideas, concerns and hypotheticals. Many hypotheticals become realities...………………...and fortunately some of the realities get addressed.

I was chatting with my good friend "TrueSouthFanOnTheCoach'sCommittee" and he brought up an interesting hypothetical.

Here is the potential situation:

Using AAA 220 as an example, lets say there are only two wrestlers in the weight class among the 29 AAA schools. One 220 pounder wins region 4. The other 220 pounder wins region 3 (Both wrestlers win the regional title by forfeit). After the regional tournaments are complete, the pill is drawn.

The pill that is selected slots the two wrestlers above to meet in the semifinals.

Is the pill sequence followed, thus the semifinal winning wrestler goes on to win the title in the finals by forfeit and the other wrestler drops to third place?

Or is an executive decision made to ignore the pill and put both wrestlers in the finals??

Are both wrestlers declared state champions? One urban and one rural???
Holy smokes. Braxton Amos works out with a landmine now!!!!!!

Well, I don't really have an answer, other than it could be worse. They could both be on the same team.

My guess is the pill would be followed with the strictest adherence...until the lawsuit. As we have learned, a lawsuit against the WVSSAC can change policy for the entire state.

One wrestler would finish as Champion, wrestler that lost in the semis finishes Third! Of course our Coaches would change the rule so they would meet in the finals. BS that they change the rules to accommodate the situation!! Just like the Skin issues,no one have the guts to stand on the rule and enforce it. Pittyful that there is a week between the Regionals and the State Tournament. After discussing this with a few College wrestling coachs they agreed thats stupid to have the break between the Regionals and the State Tournament!! Thank goodness we don't have District Tournaments it would take 5 weeks to finish the State Tournament!!

Umm do those same college coaches realize there is a break between the conference and NCAA wrestling tournament exactly the same as our regional and state.

There is quite a difference from a College National Tournament compared to a High School State Tournament . I'm sure that most College Coaches understand the difference! Besides they don't change the rules they enforce them.

The main reason the break between the regionals and the states was put in was because of the skin issue at the regionals two years ago!! In addition as far as no one having the guts to enforce the rules the referees weighing in did EXACTLY what they were supposed to do!! The WVSSAC overruled the rules interpreter due to the threat of a lawsuit!! The rules were adhered to by the rule book until that ruling!!!! In addition I think and agree with Coach Way by saying that it gives little nagging injuries time to heal so that the wrestlers can be in the best shape to compete and also for those who do scout opponents it also gives them an opportunity to prepare a different game plan for the next matchup.

If that's your reasoning so some of the bumps and bruises will heal to be in top form for the tournament maybe we should wrestle the State Tournament Monday-Wednesday- Friday so everyone will be in top shape and have their bumps and bruises healed up. The problem with the WVSSAC is that they run from every lawsuit brought at them. Taking a week of competition away makes no sense at all. Weigh ins is where skin checks are done. Either you pass or fail!! PERIOD!!

Well, this is a very hypothetical situation. However , we have received an authoritative reply as follows:

Rule 10 Section 1 Article one

Each state HS tournament is privileged to conduct those tournaments as best suits its needs. Any unusual situations that come up at any state tournament are first decided by what has been done before. 2nd is by coaches committee members present at state tournament and/or WVSSAC.

What would happen in the case of only 2 would be the lower Region number would stay put and high number would go to opposite bracket.
24 team points would be scored by each wrestler and winner of the finals would be scored 4-6.

The scoring comes from the rule that the state tournament is a continuation of the regionals. Scoring would be 4-4-4 and 12 for 2nd place.

In State Tournament competition a wrestling team can not be punished by lack of opportunity to score points.

The WVSSAC has been asked to rule upon using the 6th place regional wrestler if necessary.

EXAMPLE: Posted state tournament in Fairmont. Both were disqualified in semi-finals. Other bracket Semifinal winner is State Champion w/o match and then there is no 6th place.

This thread began as a discussion of a potential problem that is looming. It has then evolved into some clarity on handling said problem. In addition, some historical facts have been presented to help all readers have a better understanding of some decisions made and who made them.

Why should constructive dialogue end?

Based on what I have been told, I am an a$$hole. However, I am not a communist.

God bless America and God bless wrestling.

Hey A$$whole, did anyone ever own up to the note on a napkin, or is the author a chicken shoop in hiding?
