West Virginia Wrestling -- National

With Scholastic and Youth Wrestling (Folkstyle) in West Virginia on the move, we have an increasing level of participation on the National and International scene.

International and Olympic wrestling is in the form of Freestyle and Greco-Roman. While these disciplines differ from Folkstyle, the similarities between Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman are more numerous than their differences.

There are a number of different sponsoring and sanctioning bodies for amateur wrestling which hold championship tournaments in the various disciplines.

USA Wrestling

USA Wrestling is the national governing body of amateur wrestling in the United States and the member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and United World Wrestling (UWW). UWW is the international governing body for the sport of amateur wrestling; its duties include overseeing wrestling at the Olympics. It presides over international competitions for various forms of wrestling, including Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling for men and women, as well as others. The flagship event of UWW is the Wrestling World Championships. It was formerly known as the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (French: Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées, FILA), having assumed its current name in September 2014.

USA Wrestling is recognized as the governing body for wrestling nationally and internationally. It is through USA Wrestling that athletes may compete at the World Championships, the Olympics and in all events against foreign nations. USA Wrestling puts on the U.S. Nationals, and all the age group nationals (University, Espoir, Junior, Cadet, Kids).

The West Virginia National team has a qualifying tournament in March or April with the national training camp held ten days before the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

The terms "Cadet" and "Junior" refer to the ages of the participants and goes by year of birth. Cadet generally includes wrestlers age 13-15, while Junior generally includes wrestlers under age 19 and enrolled in grades 9-12.

There have been several WV wrestlers place at Cadet and Junior Nationals.

NHSCA - National High School Coaches Association

The National High School Coaches Association, founded in 1989, hosts several important national wrestling tournaments annually, including the Senior Nationals and the NHSCA Open.

The Senior Nationals are open to High School Seniors who have earned either championship or runner-up honors at their state high school wrestling tournament at some time in their high schol career. The event had its inception in 1990, and is generally held at the end of March annually.

The NHSCA Junior Nationals, originating in 2005, and NHSCA Sophomore Nationals, originating in 2006, are held in conjunction with the Senior Nationals. These are open national championship tournaments for High School sophomores and juniors.

The NHSCA Open is an annual event with Elementary, Middle School, and High School divisions. The first annual NHSCA open was held in 1998. Contestants qualify for the NHSCA Open by placing in the top four at the annual state qualifying tournament. The state qualifying tournament is generally held in April, with the National Open held generally at the end of June.

United States Girls Wrestling Association

The United States Girls Wrestling Association (USGWA)was established in 1998 and has become an leading sponsor of women's wrestling events at the national level.

Wirt County's Erica Dye wrestled in the First Annual USGWA National Championship March 28-29, 1998 at Pioneer High School, in Ann Arbor, Michigan going 0-2 in the high school division as an incoming freshman. She returned the next year and placed 9th at 100 lbs, and was runner-up in 2001 and 2002.

Amy Alvero of Weirton Madonna placed 3rd in the 2nd Annual USGWA event in 1999.

Jennifer Bragg of Midland Trail placed 11th in 2003 High School division at 114 lbs, while St Mary's Danielle Cox was runner-up in the Middle School 120 class.

Buckhannon Upshur's Brittany Woodall was champion in the Middle School division in 2003 at 110 lbs, and placed third at 110 lbs in 2004 in the High School division.

In 2004 Parkersburg South's Jessica Teter was champion at 104.5 in the Middle School division.

Also in 2004, Erin Shaffer of the Bruceton Mills (Preston County) mat club was 8th as Middle School 105, Shannon Griffin of Hedgesville was runner-up at Middle School 120, and Danielle Cox was champion at Middle School 137.

In 2005, Parkersburg South's Jessica Teter was champ at Middle School 104.5, while Shannon Griffin was runner-up at Middle School 137.5.

In 2006, Teter was runner-up at High School 105, losing in the finals to Caitlyn Chase (Hanover Park, IL, the first four-time TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American).

The Amateur Athletic Union hosts a number of opportunities for all age groups, including Folkstyle Nationals.

This organization holds a National Tournament for graduating seniors in Kansas City. This tourney is growing, but apparantly is not as large as the NHSCA tourney.
